We need questions from you, it can be anything. You can ask him about his miraculous hair if you like! :) (Devilfish will answer them next week, he's a bit busy winning the WSOPE at the moment.)

Considering his clashes with players like Prince Helmuth the VI (Phil to the majority of us) is it really just banter or are there moments he could really punch his lights out?? Has there been any close calls or is it too risky to comment openly?

Hi guys,
Devilfish was missing in action today .... presumably due to some late night partying after his trip to London
He'll be here on Monday though, so you've all got another day to post your questions
My question is:
You're playing the World Series of Poker Main Event. It is the very first hand, the blinds are 25/50 and you have 20,000 chips. You are in the Big Blind.
It is folded around to the Small Blind who announces "all-in".
As he pushes his chips into the middle he accidentally flips over his cards to reveal AK suited. You look down at your hand and you have Pocket Queens.
What do you do and why?

Sorry guys, just got word from Devilfish and he has landed in Vegas but he wont have his laptop set up until tomorrow. He'll be answering all your questions once he gets online.
Apologies for the delay but I'm sure you appreciate the fact that we really get Dave to answer these questions himself rather than ghostwriting them.

Are you playing the IPO this weekend?
How would YOU describe your playing style (not how others perceive you.)
Could you make a living playing online without your TV money/ sponsorship etc. and what would you play? MTT's, STT's, cash etc. and what stakes would you be at?

Hi all,
Thanks for the questions and sorry for the delay. As you know I've been traveling and playing a lot lately, first in London and now in Vegas so I haven't been able to get to my laptop. I'm now in my room in the Bellagio looking forward to a few weeks of poker and partying! Thanks as always for playing on the site and for posting on the forum, my answers are below and I'll chat you all again soon.

I can’t remember any particularly bad plays, but I lost a lot of chips when I was moved to a seat with a complete idiot sitting on my right. He had no idea how to play but he somehow gotten loads of chips. So anyway I took him on a lot in pots knowing that he would be giving his chips away. And he did give them away, but not to me! Unfortunately he always had best hand when we tangled, if I had AQ he had AK, if I had 66 he had 77, if I had QQ he had KK. ... He would always bet if he hit the flop and check call if he didn’t. The difficulty is that its tough to outplay bad players if you don’t have the nuts because you can’t convince them of anything and they will make bets which threaten your whole stack, for example he would bet like 20k into a 7k pot on the flop (at a point in the tournament when 20k was about a 3rd of your stack). Obviously he gave all his chips away pretty quickly but unfortunately I never had the hand to take them off him myself.

No, Phil is a bit a mammy’s boy and not a fighter. I’m not a bully and I’d never punch someone like Phil. Funny story, a couple of years ago in Vegas I was walking through the lobby and I hear a high pitched voice yelling “security, security”. I run over and there’s Phil with two big guys, like bastketball players pointing in his face having a go at him. They turned on me but I got rid of them pretty quickly. Funny to see Phil screaming for security though. But Phil is just Phil, he’s a talker not a fighter and he’s a nice guy away from the table.

I don’t think so, I’m pretty sharp with wit whereas most players don’t have a sense of humour. They just shout and scream without being funny. A couple of years back I was playing a big TV tournament and after 7 minutes Mike Matusow was crying ‘Devilfish, don’t talk to me’. Helmuth was laughing that I had managed to shut up ‘The Mouth’.

were the good old days really that good???:devil2:
It depends how far back you go. There were good days when I got married, had kids and funny things would happen in the jewellery shop. Before that times weren’t so good, I was in prison for a while and it was a pretty risky type of life. Now I have the Ferrari and the Hummer and a beautiful house so life is good, but all your experiences in the past makes you what you are today and it’s all part of the adventure.

Dave; there are many poker books out there by professional players - would you or have you ever considered writing your own?
I have a book coming out next year which I hope you will really like. It’s being published by Penguin and let’s hope it’s a best seller! It’s not a book on how to play poker, or poker techniques, it’s the story of my life from the backstreets of Hull all the way to Vegas and full of all the exciting adventures and funny stories in between. It's going really well at the moment so we are on course for its scheduled release next summer.

Most of them are pretty good players, I don’t see too many do daft things, but to be honest it is difficult for me to play because I am limited in what I can do. I can never go all-in on a bluff, so that takes away my bluff moves, which limits my play. Basically, I always have to have a hand because no matter what I do, I’m always going to get called because players are getting 24/1 on their money (€250 bounty for their €10 buy-in). But I’ve won it twice so I guess it is usually the case that I am either going to go out early or I’m going to get a lot of chips and go deep.

After your participation in last years pro-am darts (when you were let down by your partner), have you kept practising and do you hope to participate again this year?
Yeah Eddie Hearn says he’s going to do another one so I’d love to be involved. At last year’s event I gave my darts to a 12 year old kid who came up with his dad to ask for an autograph. So I haven’t been practicing as I have no darts! But one week before it’s on I’ll get some darts and practice, but I’m not the greatest. I think I killed the cat and the dog practising las year!
I’m planning on doing some cage fighting when I get back from Vegas though – I’m going to knock the fuck out of the budgie

what do you think of tom dwans million dollar challenge and who do you think will take him up on it? and better still who do you think will beat him?
I hear people are a bit bored of watching it. It’s difficult to do a million dollar challenge over this really long period of time – when’s it done it’ll probably only work out at $50 a night! It’s a bit like watching Big Brother, someone is always asleep in bed when you turn it on. But both Dwan and Antonius as good players and good luck to ‘em.

who do you think is the best female poker player?
I’d say probably Jennifer Harman or Annie Duke.
whats your favourite game type?
Omaha cash games.
what major tournaments do you plan on playing in this year?
WPT at Bellagio and then I might go to Master Classics in Holland. To be honest I don’t usually decide to go to tournaments until about a week before they’re on.

Hi Dave
What made you start to play poker?
I started playing cards around the kitchen table with mum and dad. Then I saw two films that had a big impact on me Kaleidoscope and The Cincinnati Kid. The first job I had was in a jewellery shob which made trophies and I was boxing at the time. For half of my lunch break I’d be punching the punch bag I had hanging out the back, and the other half I’d playing poker with the guys. One of the older guys then introduced me to the 51 club in Hull.

How many times have you been broke and how’d you manage to come back?
I’ve been broke more times than Humpty Dumpty. When I went broke I just had to go back to the grind in the jewellery store until I had regrouped and could get back in the game.
Who would play you in a movie of Devilfish?
'Shameless' actor James McAvoy when I was a young man... and I'd play myself as I am now!
What is your favourite live tourney?
WSOP Main Event – it’s just a pity that it’s the last tournament after 6 long weeks so everyone is fucking knackered!
What’s the best advice you can give to a moo moo like me starting out?
Money management is the main thing. And don’t move up too quickly. If you find a winning game with a winning line up stick to it and make a big profit. Don’t move up levels too quickly. If I was starting now I’d be watching players, taking notes and getting as much information as I can. Online is great for that as you can easily take note on players and check them out before ever sitting at a table with them. I’d also read everything I could get my hands on and watch the game on TV and online. There are lots of tells online, you can’t look a guy in the eye but betting patterns give a lot away and you should be taking note of how every player bets when they have the nuts, are bluffing or when they’ve only caught a little bit of the flop. So the two key things are get as much information as you can and look after your money.

hello, what is your lucky thing that help you to win in entire life?
I’m not superstitious but I have a funny story. I was in a Chinese restaurant with a girl, and there was this ornament on the table, a kind of fish in a pot. Anyway she said it looked like a Devilfish so I took it with me and I used to stand it on my cards when I was playing in Nottingham. Anyway I started to destroy the game, I won 65 out of 70 sessions or something crazy like that. Then one night I had the worst bad beat your could ever imagine and I said to the guy who ran the game “bring me a hammer”. The guy who had just won the pot, well his face dropped. He was white as a ghost. The owner then handed me the hammer and I proceeded to smash the ornament to peices, with bits of it flying everywhere! A year later when I won the bracelet I was being interviewed by the TV and the owner came up behind the camera and held up a little piece of the ornament – he’d saved it all that time!

Fold! Especially the way I run in coin flips. There is no need to take a coin flip in the first hand when everybody’s got 400 big blinds. In a way I wish the WSOP Main Event was pot limit as most of the skill in poker comes from playing the flop and you can get bad players using huge bets to their advantage in no limit because they can eliminate a lot of the skill factor with big all-ins. I like to play a lot of small pot poker so no I would fold the Queens without a second’s thought.
